Dr Mahipathi Madhwacharya Joshi

Padmashree Dr.Mahipathi Madhwacharya Joshi was born in 1935 in Nimbal village in Bijapur district, Karnataka, India. M.M.Joshi got his graduation from Baroda and post-graduation from Bombay, had his training as Registrar in Surat and Bombay. He worked with a notable Ophthalmic Surgeon in Bombay. This built-in him the confidence and an un-comparing attitude on quality. After a long thought, he decided to come to Hubli – Dharwad as his ‘Karma Bhumi’ – leaving lucrative offers from many corners. At this point in time perhaps he was the first postgraduate in Ophthalmology in the whole Karnataka. He was first to start an exclusive ophthalmic hospital as a Consultant Doctor. It was a humble beginning, with the long struggle to establish. Gradually he became a legend for his hard work & quality services. His coming to Hubli Dharwad was a boon to the society. He is not only a good surgeon but also an Institution builder. Though he was a moderately rich man, he wanted to be self – made man, which he is today. As a Proprietor, he started a small clinic that grew bigger and bigger and today he has built an enviable Institute of 60 beds with all specializations, well equipped with all the latest equipment and nationally reputed consultant doctors group. This is one of the biggest private-sector Eye Institute. Today, his Institute attends 400 outpatients and operates over 50 patients per day. His contribution is that he has put Hubli Dharwad on the Ophthalmic Map of India. His Institute can cater to any eye problem. No patient needs to go to any big place for any complication. Institute gets several referral cases from all corners of the catchment area. His Institute has earned the reputation of being the most dependable centre for Eye care services. His selection of Men and equipment is amazing. His man-management is so human that there is the least turnover of personnel. His style of management is democratic under proprietorship. His culture is uncompromising for quality and consideration for the affordability of the community is evident. In short, his long struggle, commitment to building an institution, has benefited the public of Hubli Dharwad. His Institute has been recognized for postgraduate training in Ophthalmology NBE-New Delhi. Dr M. M. Joshi believes strongly in continued education updating the latest technology. At least two large scale Continuing Medical Education programs are conducted every year in the institute. Institute encourages consultant doctors to present quality papers in various national Conferences. The greatest quality of Dr M. M. Joshi is teaching young aspiring ophthalmologists to gain the confidence to be on their own. He was a postgraduate teacher at “KMC” Hubli, for 6 years. Equally visible is another facet of Dr M. M. Joshi. He firmly believes that he owes a lot to the community and wants to express his gratitude in terms of services to them. He has chosen poor needy people from rural masses and slum areas for his services to the community. He has amazing statistics for his community service. So far he has conducted 1211 free eye camps, checked and advised over 13 lakhs people and operated over 3,00,000 patients. Patients in free eye camps, get free operation, free food, and travel for self and a person who accompanies them. Dr M. M. Joshi’s ancestors gave eyes to many people to see one’s inner self. Now in this era, Dr M. M. Joshi gives sight to see this beautiful, world with the background of his family, he believes that one should not lose his eye because of one’s poverty. Hence, his quality of work for paying patients and free patients remains the same.

Dr M. M. Joshi gets National Recognition. Dr M. M. Joshi, renowned Eye surgeon of Hubli has been awarded the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ by All India Ophthalmological Society for the year 2013-14. It is a distinguished professional honour given once in a year by the National body for Eye specialists who have done yeoman service to the society, said Dr Quresh Maskati, the President of All India Ophthalmological Society. Dr Joshi received this Award in the AIOS conference held at New Delhi in February 2015. Dr M. M. Joshi, our Medical Director has been conferred with the prestigious “Padma Shri” Award from Government of India as a recognition of his yeoman service to mankind in the field of community Eye Care.
