Childhood blindness has been the thrust area for the SGM Trust as the Socio-economic implications of Childhood Blindness are enormous.

M.M. Joshi Eye Institute has tied up with the Department of Public Instruction (Education Department) under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) Scheme for the comprehensive Eye Care services of Government School children of various districts of Karnataka, totally free of cost. The modus operandi of this `School Sight Programme’ is training one teacher per government school in various aspects of the detection of Eye problems and blindness in school children and providing them the kit necessary for Eye Examination.

The children with defective vision and other Eye problems are shortlisted in the school itself and are referred to the M.M. Joshi Eye Institute for detailed Eye Examination, provision of medicines and spectacles and for Eye Surgery. This ensures optimum utilization of resources and effective use of specialist services to needy children. The programme so far has been very successful in Dharwad, Bijapur and Haveri districts of North Karnataka.
