Dr M.M. Joshi has played a pivotal role in popularizing Eye camps in the entire region of North Karnataka since 1967. Community Ophthalmology services have been the backbone of the public trust reposed over this Institution. The name of Dr M. M. Joshi has been closely associated with free eye camps. M.M.Joshi Eye Institute has been conducting safe, scientific eye camps in the entire North Karnataka wherein poor blind people undergo the ultra-modern technique of cataract surgery free of cost. Quality consciousness even in free cataract surgical camps has been the guiding philosophy. Dr M. M. Joshi established a charitable trust in 1979 called Shri Guru Mahipatiraj Eye Bank & Research Foundation Trust (SGM Trust) to render free service to the poor people of rural areas in the eradication of blindness. So far he has conducted around 1500 free eye camps in rural areas with the co-operation of service Organisations like Rotary, Lions & local bodies. In these camps about 13,00,000 people have received examination of the eyes & treatment and around one lakh persons have been operated upon for visual rehabilitation with best scientific procedures including microsurgical intraocular lens implantation. In this 53 years of Ophthalmic practice, nearly 2.5 lakh persons have undergone sight-restoring Eye surgeries in camps. M. M. Joshi Eye Institute Hubballi has 7 vision centres in Ron, Kukanoor, Naragund, Mundargi, Mundgod, Hangal and Navalgund to avoid needless blindness in rural areas.
